So what’s this God thing all about? Maybe you’ve asked yourself that question in the past, or perhaps you’re asking it now. At some point in our life we all tend to search for some sort of meaning: Why am I here? What is my life all about? Is this all there is?
Some people looking for meaning in possessions: car, computer, iPod, money; some people look for meaning in relationships: girlfriend or boyfriend; and some people look for meaning in appearance: working out, having the right clothes. No matter where we might try to look for meaning or significance there is only one place where we can find true, life-long significance in our lives: God.
Choosing to follow God is not about a bunch of rules. At times people get the impression that going to church or being a Christian is just about rules. But at the heart of being a Christian is a relationship. This relationship is with God first, but our relationship with God also affects our relationship with others.
You see, God longs to have a relationship with you, but God will never force you into a relationship. God gives each one of us the freedom to choose to have this relationship.
Why do I need this relationship? While God wants to have a relationship with us, we naturally want to do things our own way. The Bible calls this sin. It doesn’t matter if we have rebelled against God, or simply ignored Him, it’s all sin, and the problem with sin is that it creates a barrier between God and us. There is only one way to bridge this barrier and that is through Jesus. The Bible tells us that God sent his only son, Jesus, to die for our sins so that we could have a relationship with God (John 3:16).
What must I do? Remember, God does not force us into a relationship. God offers us a relationship, but we must choose to receive that offer. So all you must do is choose to receive the gift of relationship that God has offered to you through His Son. Then, it simply comes down to working to live your life in such a way so that you would honor and build up your relationship with God. That’s it.
